- Idiom: the particular and individual way a person uses languge and expreses his idea. Ex "A chip on your shoulder"
- Imagery: is a literary devise that atemps to create mental images the audince con imagine to persuade or prove a point. Ex: -Teena Marie, “Portuguese Love”The sample above was taken from soul, songstress of the 1980s, Teena Marie’s hit love song entitled “Portuguese Love.” Did you notice how descriptive the lyrics are? In this sample alone, the imagery is increasingly apparent to the reader. Even though this is a portion of the lyrics from a song, if you read it, you can almost feel the sand of the beach beneath your feet.
- Justaposition: to put very close together two or more things to contrast one with the other. Ex: John Milton´s “Paradise Lost” is one of the narrative poems that can be used as examples of juxtaposition. This well-crafted literary piece is clearly based on the juxtaposition of two characters: God and Satan. Frequently in the poem, the bad qualities of Satan and the good qualities of God are placed side by side and comparison hence made brings to the surface the contrast between the two characters. The juxtaposition in the poem helps us to reach a conclusion that Satan deserved his expulsion from the paradise because of his unwillingness to submit to God’s will.
- Metonymy: to name a thing or concept by another title close related to the original one. Ex: Let me give you a hand. (Hand means help.)
- Onomatopoeia: the formation of a word by the imitation of sounds. Ex: cuckoo, meow, honk
- Parallelism: Parallelism is the use of components in a sentence that are grammatically the same; or similar in their construction, sound, meaning. Ex: “To err is human; to forgive divine.”Imperfection is a human trait and God is most forgiving. Through these antithetical but parallel structures, the poet wants to say that God is forgiving because his creation is erring.
- Propaganda: is the spread information that tries to convince specifis groups of people of sth. Ex: During the McCarthy Era, mass media tried to convince everyone that Communists were taking over the United States
