In the following text, I will compare two articles "A Clockwork Orange and Its Discontents " and "Pulping A Clockwork Orange"
In the first article, the author makes reference to Stanley Kubrick's film based
on A Clockwork Orange which was hardly criticized for
all the violence and sexual scenes that this one had and the exaggerated
employment of classical music.
The music in the movie should be able to make the scenes softer than what they are, like an imaginary wall that the music builds in order to shorten the moral impact that the people can have, but, according to the essay the music in
the movie just causes scenes that are unpleasant to watch. like Alex, when he
hits Mr. Alexander and undresses Mr. Alexander's wife while he
sings "Singing in the rain" here, the strange pleasure that Alex has
for committing crimes makes the scene uncomfortable for the viewer
The second article highlights the failure of the book blaming Burgess for
destroying the English language but, congratulating Kubrick's movie for
making the film more interesting than the movie. In this article, the author
says that the restored ending in the movie ( showing Alex as a guy who is
needed for choice) as a result of not taken into account the last chapter was
the reason for the success of this movie ; while Burgess book looks more like a
cliché with a happy ending, where Alex reaches his maturity and leaves behind
his "ultraviolence acts" gaining the anger of the readers who dislike
the idea of a Good Alex.
This article also discusses Kubrick's technique for making the viewers be aware of
Alex's situation at "Ludovico Technique" to realize that Alex was no
longer free and turn out to be a muppet. This in order to represent the lack of
free will.
Both articles mention that the movie differs with the book in the way that these
ones are shown, the book has NADSAT which is a way to not having a catharsis
every time that Alex rape girls or hit old men at some point this is a
distraction because you are not fully aware of this actions instead as a reader
you are trying to figure out the meaning of the words, but what happened when
is a movie? well, there is nothing that can distract you everything is so graphic that makes you feel uncomfortable , the reason why the director has
been criticized for this film but awarded for the incredible ending.
Good job.
